This article brings back a lot of memories... I've been keeping up a pretty similar web-programming site to this (allthough in finnish) for about 3 years and I confronted similar problems way back when the site started growing and the layout/functionality needed to be changed in all pages.

The first solution I tried was dreamweaver templates. It didn't satisfy me, so I dusted out UltraEdit and VBScript reference and handcoded my private template system. The first versions were a real "pain in the ass" to use but by the time It has improved a lot.

Some of the things I would recommend to put a heavy weight are the database structure and the overall functionality of the template system. Making changes to these two afterwards is something I would not descripe a nice thing. Allthough I put a lot of time (and experience) into these two fields in early desing, it took almost a year before practical use was "perfect"....

I wish you guys good luck. Once your work start's rocking, it never stops rolling..;)

This is a great idea for an article, a case study of the inner workings (and failings) of a large, content driven and above all real website. However as some of the others on here have noted, the article simply doesn't do far enough. There need to be code examples and diagrams of the underlying structure in order for the content to be of any practical use... <><>

How can we learn from your mistakes when we do not see what you are actually doing to correct it? You mention this JScript, ASP, database-driven approach. Great! But what does that do for anyone reading this article. All we learned is that if we want to emulate you we should consider a JScript, ASP, database-driven approach. But that hardly warranted an article.

Excellent article.  Would there be any chance of a diagram showing the overall functionality of the backend design?

Also, there seems to be problems when trying to print the article out. The lines are cut off at the end, which means I'm trying to suss this out by staring at the monitor and my eyes are hurting.

Great article. There must be more issues/considerations though for this site. I would LOVE to see more discussion on this......
