what did you expect to happen to a javascript technique when javascript got turned off?  the technique is still quite valid because it can prevent extra hits at the server.  all programmers worth their salt don't rely solely on client validation, but they also try to prevent unnecessary processing on the server.

as for netscape:  it is a simple matter to adapt the script.  it takes a modicum of effort.

Useless. Switch off Javascript / active scripting and hit it.

U gotta use server side checking (PHP, ASP or whatever) to really check the input. Anything else is nonsense.

Most databases will enable you to declare default values on columns.  You may also want an AND operation included to make sure the user must enter a value.  I can tell you that a component which can determine all of this would be mighty useful.  Ever thought of becoming an author?
