 Confusing Problem

Hi.

I currently run a home network that has been plauged by problems.

My Internet connection is a NTL cable modem connection. I have a Netgear Wireless/Cable Router. The wireless part works fine for now and is not a major issue. The biggest problem is the Cable modem and router refuse to connect to each other. When i take the ethernet cable from the modem and plug it in to the WAN port on the router nothing happens. The Ethernet LED on the modem doesn't even flicker and the modem the same. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did they rectify it?

Well i have managed to get around this problem by connecting to the net through my PC and broadcasting the internet to the network using Analog X Proxy http://www.analogx.com/CONTENTS/download/network/proxy.htm . This has proven a good work around until one of my friends PC developed a problem.

If she went to www.google.com and then did a search any result would either send her an error or back to google. This confused me for a while until i relised that after visiting google the domain of any address she tried to navigate to didn't change. i.e. if search google for "monkeys" gave her a link to www.monkeys.com/monkey/index.html the main domain (www.google.com) won't change to www.monkey.com and as such clicking on the link showed an error that "/monkey/index.html" was on the www.google.com domain. More confusing was that the address bar had changed to show the new address. If the link was only for the main domain ie. www.monkey.com then it would redirect you straight back the google home page. This happens in both IE and firefox.

Question is this a Spyware on either hers or my PC or is a problem with the proxy.

Thanks for reading, its been a bit long but thats the problem

Matt

Does the Netgear router have a built-in cable modem? If yes then you need to enter your NTL details into the router and plug the INPUT to the modem into the router WAN port.

The other solution may be that you may need to advise NTL (now Virgin Media?) of the change of setup so that they recognise your router.

As regards the proxy issue - sorry, can't help.
