 JavaScript Resources & Recommendations

Getting back into web design, it seems, with about 5 years of catchup, as I've been doing circu 2007 design for that time period - and even then, I was using books and techniques from the late '90's.  Never really learned the DOM or AJAX or the other stuff since then.  I don't want to screw up the huge commercial site that I do, using advanced techniques that may not work well on the new media - cells, pdas, etc. - or will break on various browsers, but surely there has been progress... ??

So, first order of business, can someone recommend some good free downloadable JavaScript manuals and other downloadable refs that are not more than a couple years old?  Also, where are we at with HTML and what were supposed to be graphic and 3D extensions?

Thanks
