I'd considered that. Could I download all of the same apps I have now, though? I have several development apps, some graphics apps, some DB apps, etc.
From what I understand, Sun's JVM isn't available for 64 bit Ubuntu.
I talked to a colleague/friend who suggested 32 bit, because I really don't need the increase in performance that 64 bit would give.
Additionally, do you think I'd be able to install Oracle on it? I've had so much trouble installing it. bod1467 on Apr 5, 2011 at 3:51:27 AM (# 7)I can understand why 32-bit might be used. As for Oracle, last time I installed it on a machine it was at version 8. :) brian on Apr 5, 2011 at 6:17:10 AM (# 8)Monte, I believe it is a problem with the oracle installer. I recently downloaded the latest oracle 11R2 install and it failed miserably. I ended up going back to an older version which worked just fine. This was on Windows 2003 (i think, could have been 2008) 32-bit as a Virtual PC. For what I need it to do, I don't care about how up-to-date it is since most customers will probably still be using 9 or 10.
My suggestion would be to grab v10 and give it a whirl and see if it works. Monte on Apr 5, 2011 at 10:09:43 AM (# 9)Remember, this was on a Linux computer.
Anyway, if it's any help, here's the error:

SQL Server 2000 was a pain to install but once you knew the issues was fine.
Oracle however, going back as far as v7/8 has always been a nightmare. V7 was command line, V8 required a GUI so if you were running on an older platform such as sunos, it was a no-go.
I've worked on various unix and linux based oracles and the least painful has always been...oh wait, no, always pain, suffering and nightmares.
Unless you really need to use oracle, don't go there. Monte on Apr 8, 2011 at 4:10:23 AM (# 11)Well, it's not so much a matter of need, as it is a matter of want. This way I can learn it better. computer repair on Nov 3, 2011 at 8:42:56 AM (# 12)I'm reading a different post to the top level one regarding a computer build... weird. was going to reply to that but this has now gone to software discussion not Computer Repair .
