Questions about building a computer.
I have an old HP computer at home. I think it's something like an xe813 or something like that.
Anyway, at one point, I put Ubuntu Linux on it, but couldn't really do anything with it, because it's such an old machine. I had to downgrade to Lubuntu, but it was still painfully slow (733 Celeron with 256 MB max RAM).
I've been considering replacing the motherboard, CPU, and RAM in it for quite some time. I think I can buy those items (at least at the level to get me started) for around $100 USD.
Anyway, my main question is about the mother board. I think it's a Mini ATX, but I don't know for sure. I found an inexpensive motherboard, but I don't want to buy it if it won't fit in my existing chassis.
As well, I found a 2.7 GHz processor and 2 GB of ram. So that's motherboard + processor + ram for just under $100 USD (plus shipping).
At some point, too, I'll probably upgrade the hard drive (since I think it has either a 40 GB or a 10 GB -- one failed and I don't remember which). Probably a 500GB or maybe a 1TB, and I'll probably upgrade the CD burner to a CD/DVD burner combo, but that's a later iteration.
So, how can I determine what type of motherboard is compatible with my chassis? I don't think the site I was on has actual measurements for motherboards.
