WinME can it be fixed from my system restore discs?

I read a discussion about someone having some similiar problems with windows IE that I am currently having plus a few more.  This person had XP and I have ME.  IT was problems not being to download stuff, and things disappearing from toolbars.  Me too, and my computer has been locking up a lot when trying to download stuff.  They didnt mention lock ups  happening to theirs, but mine has been. Their fix was to shut down with restore disk in the rom, ....tap some F keys and pick a certain option as prompted to "fix".  I wanted to know, if this is for XP only, or would  this fix also work from the system I have WinME, and IE 6.  I'd like to keep IE 6, since at one time I upgraded my IE and had nothing but problems, and so I dumped everything and started over with the restore disks.  I hate to lose everything I've got on my computer again, so I wondered if this would work for me like it worked for them.  They said everything worked fine after doing that fix thing from the disks. I've scanned for virus and have none.  If this will work for me using my system restore disc, could someone tell me how to do this, which "F keys" and all that I need to do to fix without losing my files and other docs that I presently have on my computer. Replies here are fine, and also helpful at my email greeneyes7951@comcast.net Thank you for any help anyone can give me, as I am very exasperated with all this.
