How do I add text dynamically to a portion of a page

I have a form in which the user can enter up to 10 zip codes.  Right now, though it looks klunky, I have 10 individual text boxes in which to enter the data.  What I'd like to do is have a simple text area (not a scrollable text box) above a single text box which, after clicking a button, displays the zip codes entered thus far.  I'm pretty sure there's a way to do this, but I can't remember how.  Can someone please help me?
