 Wireless connection distance and...

We have some property, and one building will have a pc hardwired to the internet.  I'm curious as to the distance I could shoot a wireless signal from that hardwired pc, to other buildings/areas on the property?  Via a road, the distance is maybe one mile, but a straight line shot would be less.

Somebody at work said that they've received a wireless signal from their home pc to their laptop, up to roughly 3 miles from his place?  I figure it's most likely another wireless connection he's intercepting, but would truly appreciate some additional comments regarding the distance I could shoot the signal.

In addition to the distance, what would be my best choice of wireless router (no mac involved), to tackle this, and even wireless cards, since there may be more than one pc or laptop being used at any given time (shop use, home, etc.)

I've heard that what I want to do is not really a problem, but I'm such a noobie to this stuff, doing it is another story for me.  Thanks for the advice.

with the standard antenna attached maybe 300m/1000ft
indoors about 50m/150ft, depending on the type of walls and interfering equippement.

For larger distances we use external antenna.
with a 60cm 21dB di-pole antenna we do over 2miles (3.5km) point-to-point.
with a 90cm 23dB di-pole antenna we managed to do 5.5mi (8.5km) point-to-point. both had a clear line of sight.
The 19dB onmni-directional antenna at 10m/30ft height provides us with a footprint of about 1 mile.

note: we use wireless only to bring the signal over distances outdoors. in-house it's all wired.

For the router part, pick a brand of router with a reputation. not some el-cheapo thing from the supermarket.
Try to find one with a detachable antenna (so you can attach an out-door antenna if needed) and a build-in switch (to attach your hardwired pc to it.)

We use linksys accesspoints and switches. (3com is a little more sensitive) As router we stilluse the standard modem/router for the xDSL. A pc runnning Clarkconnect is (still) being prepared to replace the router. (gateway/logging proxy/firewall/router)

The distance and the location have a lot to count for, not to mention what is in the path of the wireless devices.

My Dear,

Our company is a distributor of herbs roots to a United Kingdom client and they have call us to supply Kamzi.H2 Root ,So we are looking for trustworthy and honest partnership for this long term transaction.

I have Purchased the root called Kamzi.H2 Root before in Malaysia at the rate of $200 American dollars per packet of which I sold to my client at the rate of $900 American dollar, its been use to cure Lungs Cancer and Diabetes.

But this time l will not be able to fly over to Malaysia for this business at this time, because of my position at the company now, so if you are interested, I can give you the contact of the seller in Malaysia and connect you with the Buyer who is in need of this root as the main dealer, so you and l can share the profit margin on it as the buyer is ready to fly over to Malaysia for the root at the moment and he's ready to purchase 5000 packets (Five Thousand packets).

I don't want to introduce the seller over there in Malaysia to the UK buyer directly because of the profit margin.

Kindly get back to me for more details if you are interested.get back to me via my personal email address (jeff_main@ymail.com)

Best Regards,
Jeff Mains.
