 Saving old layers as variables

My web site is designed as one single page, made up of multiple layers.  What I would like to do is this:  When someone clicks on a link to hide one layer and reveal another, I would like to save the current layer as a variable, so that I can set up a pseudo back button.  In other words, How do I make a back button (or limk) to go back to the previous layer (rather than the previous page)?

If you would like to view the site, feel free to check out http://www.sesonsite.com/Ten-321.  That is the front page, which, upon clicking the link, will open the web site in a sized window with no toolbars (to allow for perfect sizing, and to prevent people from pressing things like the "Refresh" button, which would set them back at the "Home" layer, instead of refreshing the layer they are currently viewing.

If you do not understand my question, I will try to elaborate if you ask.  I would like to thank you all for the help you have given me, up to this point.  I would also like to thank you in advance for taking time out of your schedules to help someone like me (who is clearly on a much lower rung of the ladder of web design than all of you).

Hello all,

I apologize for posting that question without trying a few more things first.  I think I finally figured it out.  It's not perfect, but it is about as close as I can possibly get it.  Sorry for my ignorance.

Thanks,

Curt
